Our Story
A Legacy of Horses, Family, and Tradition
At Double O Ranch, our roots run deep, intertwined with a rich history of horsemanship, family values, and a passion for the land. Our story began long before the ranch was officially established, with a great-grandfather who was a skilled horse trainer, passing down a love for horses through the generations. The "Double O" represents the two Os in the founder's last name, Moore🐎.
The ranch’s founder, Alfred Moore, discovered his love for horses as a young boy who grew up in Robins, IL. He would often sneak away to watch the Latting Boys, a group of local rodeo performers, rehearse their trick riding. Despite being caught several times, his determination never wavered. His grandmother recognized his passion and surprised him with his first pair of cowboy boots. That simple gift ignited a spark that would shape his future.
For years, Alfred Moore saved every penny to collect the essentials for a horse saddle and riding gear. His dream came true when he finally got his first horse, Red, a spirited mare. With Red by his side, he embarked on a journey to gain over 20 years of experience in rodeoing and cowboying, honing his skills and deepening his connection with these magnificent animals.
In 1993, Alfred Moore and his wife, Shirley Moore, turned their love for horses and into something bigger—a ranch where they could offer the joys of horseback riding and ranching to the community. Over the next 20 years, the couple and their family created a haven where people of all ages could experience the beauty and serenity of the outdoors.
One of their most popular events was the “Bring a Horse to Your Backyard” birthday party, where children could experience the thrill of having a horse visit their home. With a firm commitment to quality, Alfred Moore was known for rallying the crew with his favorite saying, “Let’s get this place in Double O shape!”—a call to ensure everything was in perfect order.
Today, the ranch is a testament to the founder’s lifelong dedication. Visitors might even glimpse his 2-year-old great-grandson, already showing signs of following in his footsteps, riding his horse Whiskey. The tradition of horse farming and ranch maintenance has been passed down through generations, with each child and grandchild learning the importance of caring for the land and the animals. While some have ventured off to new opportunities, including one grandson who earned a scholarship to a prestigious rodeo school, the legacy of horsemanship remains a cornerstone of the family’s life.
Looking to the Future
In 2024, the owners of Double O Ranch felt a deep calling to give back to the community that has supported their ranch for so many years. They witnessed firsthand how the ranch transformed lives—whether through the simple joy of interacting with the horses, horseback riding, the peace found in nature, or the bonds formed during community events.
“I remember when a teenager had not spoken a word in a couple of years due to trauma, and when he visited our ranch, he said, "Wow, look at all of the trees! another time Also, an autistic child who does not pay any attention to dogs or cats visited our ranch and was drawn to rubbing on our horses' faces. All over her face, you could see she was in a peaceful space”.

Realizing that not everyone can access these experiences, they boldly decided to create a nonprofit sector of the ranch. This step was driven by a desire to ensure that the therapeutic benefits of nature and the uplifting spirit of the ranch could be shared with those who need it most, especially underprivileged youth, struggling families, veterans, and the elderly. By becoming a nonprofit, they are committed to breaking down financial barriers and creating a space where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can find healing, connection, and hope.
As we continue to grow, Double O Ranch remains committed to the values guiding us from the beginning: family, community, and the timeless bond between humans and horses. Whether you’re here for a ride, a community event, or to connect with nature, we welcome you to become part of our story🐎.
